How to Create an Instagram Collab Post
Instagram’s collaboration feature allows the same post to reach the audiences of several profiles. Here is how to set it up correctly.
An Instagram collab is a great way to reach people who do not already follow you. Several creators can publish the same content together, with the post collecting its likes, comments and saves in one place.
It is also a useful way to credit everyone involved in a project without each person having to publish the same content separately.
A total of up to 20 accounts can currently collaborate on one post, which means the feature can also work for larger teams.
A few ideas for Instagram collaborations
- The obvious example is a project involving several people who all want to share the finished result. You might invite the model from a portrait session, benefiting both of you. For a larger production, you can also include the makeup artist, hairstylist, stylist or creative director. Once everybody accepts, the post can reach the combined audiences of the participating accounts.
- If you manage several Instagram accounts and want to increase the reach of a post on one of them, you can invite your other account as a collaborator. You can later remove the post from the invited account if you do not want to keep it there permanently.
- A less common approach is to collaborate with an aggregator account. These profiles share other people’s photographs and videos with credit, often generating a significantly larger number of likes and comments for their own pages in the process.
A few requirements before you begin
- All participants should follow one another. A private account can also take part, but it needs to accept your follow request before you send the collaboration invitation.
- Collaboration posts currently need to be created through the Instagram mobile application rather than the website.
How to create an Instagram collab post
- Create a new post as usual. Add your photographs or videos and apply any effects you need on the following screen.
- On the caption screen, select Tag people, followed by Invite collaborators. You can add the participating accounts here.
When you publish the post, every invited participant receives a request in their notifications. They can review the post and either accept or decline the collaboration invitation.
As soon as somebody accepts, the post also appears in the feed on their profile.
I accepted an Instagram collab but now want to leave it. What should I do?
Open the post, select the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and choose Stop sharing. The post will then disappear from your profile feed.
